Fernando “Dhunoy’’ Raquel made his move on the final stretch of the 1,800-meter race as Boss Emong galloped past Sky Shot and sped ahead of the pack before holding off a ferocious chase by Super Swerte near the line.
The grey galloper owned by Edward Vincent Diokno grabbed victory by a head and captured the champion’s purse of the race held in honor of the late Philracom Chairman Andrew Sanchez worth P1.2 million. Super Swerte, the pre-race favorite, took second-place honors and the P400,000 reward followed by Pangalusian Island (P200,000).
“I’m very pleased with the way Boss Emong performed to win this one. But I tell you, you have not yet seen the best of my horse,’’ said Diokno.
It was a well-timed move by Raquel with 3/8 of a mile left in the race after Sky Shot led a blistering pace off the gates.
Heneral Kalentong settled for fourth place worth P100,000 while Shanghai Grey (P60,000) and Son Also Rises (P40,000) arrived fifth and sixth, respectively.
The daughter of the former Chairman Sanchez was present to receive the plaque of recognition in honor of his late father Chairman Sanchez. “I’m very honored and happy for this plaque of recognition as well as my mom and my siblings. The races continue to be exciting. Thank you Philracom,” said Miren Sanchez.
Also receiving their awards during Sunday’s proceedings were the winners in Philracom’s Summer Racing Festival starting off with Jesse B. Guce as the winningest jockey.
